Providing Building Materials That Build Communities

At Brett we’re proud to be a part of the local communities around our sites and so Jason Tomlins, the Operations Manager at Brett Aggregates’ Cliffe site, was delighted to be able to answer the call for a donation of material to St Helen’s Church of England Primary School for the creation of their new lending library.

The idea for the library was put forward by the school’s parent teacher association (PTA), with the aim of creating a new dedicated learning facility. Zoe Bowles, Chair of the PTA and a Governor of the school, said “Our library has been hosted in an open corridor, and whilst it has been great, it hasn’t given us the space to really make the most of it.”

Zoe approached the team at Brett Aggregates for support in the construction of the library who helped to organise one tonne of 10mm pea shingle – an aggregate commonly used to help with drainage underneath building foundations – from their Cliffe site to the school.

The new learning space will be run by Year 4 and Year 5 pupils and include an electronic library card system to allow the children to easily borrow books, as well as enough room for half a class at a time to enjoy small workshops and learning activities. It will also provide new reception children a space to join ‘settling in sessions’ throughout the summer before starting school in September.

Jason Tomlins, Operations Manager at Brett Aggregates, commented: “We worked closely with our neighbours Day Aggregates for this donation, who help to deliver the material. At Cliffe we typically deal with larger volumes, so we reached out to Day Aggregates for assistance – who kindly offered to load our material into smaller, manageable sized bags, and supply to site on a smaller vehicle. I’m proud of the teams here at Brett and over at Day Aggregates for pulling together to support this project.”

Zoe added “This donation is very much appreciated - the new facility will help to support our children by providing a dedicated space to enjoy learning and gives them access to books that they can then continue reading at home.”
