Brett Cycle Team Raises Over £24,000 For Children's Medical Charity

Five senior managers from Brett Group and its companies took part in the second annual Ziggurat cycle ride, helping to raise over £115,000 for children's medical charity Action Medical Research.

Five senior managers from Brett Group and its companies took part in the second annual Ziggurat cycle ride, helping to raise over £115,000 for children’s medical charity Action Medical Research.

Brett was one of three major sponsors from the construction and built environment sector who sponsored this year’s challenge, which saw 55 cyclists take on a 300-mile ride from London to Brussels over four days. Setting out from the iconic London Velodrome in the Olympic Park, the participants cycled across Essex to Harwich, where they boarded a ferry to the Hook of Holland.  From there they headed for Amsterdam then on to Brussels where they crossed the finish line outside the Palais de Bruxelles on 15 September.

Brett Group Chairman, Bill Brett, led the group’s ride team joined by Chief Operating Officer, Alan Smith, Luke Smith, Managing Director of the recently launched Capital Concrete, David Barrett, Non-executive Director at Capital Concrete and Tim Smith, Commercial Director at Brett Aggregates.

This was the second ‘Ziggurat’ for Luke who comments: ‘The days were filled with fantastic scenery – windmills, canals, beautiful Dutch villages – and there was a superb level of friendly support from the event organisers.  Overall it was a terrific and amazing experience as well as an opportunity to spend some quality time with other professionals in the construction industry, all for a good cause raising money for a truly worthwhile charity.

“All of that helped take my mind of the fact that my body was aching beyond belief and sore and fatigued almost to the point of collapse for much of the four days. I loved it!’

Brett Aggregates Commercial Director, Tim Smith shares Luke’s enthusiasm: “The Ziggurat is a unique event giving an opportunity not only to raise money for a worthy cause but to forge closer bonds with customers and colleagues alike and to grow your network of industry contacts – all done whilst doing something I love!”

Action is a UK-wide children’s medical charity which funds desperately needed research to tackle the diseases that may devastate the lives of children. It has been funding medical breakthroughs since it began in 1952 including helping to introduce the first polio vaccines in the UK, developing the use of ultrasound in pregnancy and testing the rubella vaccine.

The charity is currently funding research into areas including premature birth, epilepsy, asthma, scarlet fever, cerebral palsy, brain cancer and other rare and distressing conditions.

“We are absolutely blown away with how successful this year’s ride has been”, says Action’s Senior Partnerships Development Manager, Sarah Stevenson. “We could not do it without our wonderful supporters and event partners. It’s fantastic to see so many keen cyclists in the construction industry!”

Bill Brett and Alan Smith are old hands at the Ziggurat ride, having taken part in last year’s challenge, which took them from London to Paris. The Brett team has raised over £70,000 for the charity over the course of the two bike rides.

Bill Brett, Chairman of the Brett Group commented, “This event is always very well organised and each year it brings different challenges for the cycling teams involved. We are delighted with the overall funds raised and are proud to have supported the Ziggurat bike ride and the children’s medical charity it represents.”
