Acting Responsibly

Responsible Sourcing

Brett Concrete is continuously improving social, economic and environmental standards by providing materials that have been sourced responsibly, reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the production process (CO2) and protecting the environment and natural resources. Brett Concrete is externally certified to BES 6001 Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products by Construction Products Certification (CPC). We are a founder member of the Sustainable Concrete Forum, backed by the MPA – Concrete Centre and we support the Concrete Industry Sustainable Construction Strategy, objectives and commitments:

Objectives

  • Commit to our role in achieving a sustainable built environment and contribute to construction industry and government initiatives
  • Engage with the broader supply chain to inform good practice and continue to explore new ways of improving our sustainable production performance
  • Communicate with clients to provide knowledge of concrete solutions to enable the design and construction of a sustainable built environment

Through the introduction of specific policies, measures and targets and by proactively engaging with our customers, suppliers and employees, Brett Concrete aims to improve the sustainability performance across all aspects of its business. To achieve this we:

- Work closely with our suppliers to encourage the responsible sourcing of materials throughout the supply chain and ensure all relevant standards and best practices are maintained

- Reduce green house gas emissions by:

  • improving the energy efficiency of all plant and equipment
  • effectively managing our transportation to optimise vehicle use including using larger vehicles where appropriate to reduce the number of journeys

- Minimise environmental impacts by:

  • reducing waste generated from the production process and promoting recycling where possible by having recycling bins on every plant to ensure only a very small amount of waste goes to landfill
  • using secondary materials such as recycled aggregates and cement replacement materials such as Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) and admixtures to reduce CO2 per cubic metre where appropriate
  • conserving natural resources such as water by efficient recycling to minimise impacts on mains water eg using recycled water for washing down vehicles
  • Maintain the highest standards of health and safety throughout the workplace and provide training, instruction and supervision to ensure all employees are competent and fully aware of their responsibilities
  • Focus on being a good neighbour and build trustworthy relationships with our customers, regulatory bodies, relevant authorities and the local community.
