Brett Scoops Prestigious Awards For Biodiversity

The Brett Group has been presented with the biodiversity award by the Mineral Products Association for its overall commitment

The Brett Group has been presented with the biodiversity award by the Mineral Products Association for its overall commitment to biodiversity & nature conservation. Brett were also commended for the restoration of Park Lodge in Buckinghamshire and highly commended by Natural England for biodiversity demonstrated in the restoration of Villa Quarry in Essex.

The MPA Biodiversity Commitment Award was presented to Bill Brett by Nigel Jackson, Chief Executive of the MPA, who, commenting on this and the award by Natural England, said, "Villa Quarry is a brilliant example of Brett Group's keen efforts to promote biodiversity. Although the site is a fairly small one, it has delivered substantial wildlife benefits".

At Villa Quarry, Brett Aggregates has worked closely with Andy May of Essex Wildlife Trust and Robin Cottrill of Cockaynes Wood Trust to create footpaths and boardwalks through the land and has built an exceptional habitat for invertebrates with a mix of lowland heathland, landscaped lakes and wet woodland. The land at the Park lodge site was restored for agricultural usage; the restoration was completed over two phases and included successful
drainage remedial works. The work at this site was complimented by
the active involvement of the local community Liaison Committee.

Commenting on the awards Bill said, “Restoring sites that are rich in wildlife and that benefit the local community has always been a priority for Brett. I am delighted that our work at Villa Quarry – led by Phil Harding and Olly Brown -and our partnership with local conservation experts has been recognised. This is very much a “live project”, and future developments include involving local schools and the creation of wheel chair access. Overall our efforts at both Villa Quarry and our restoration to agricultural land at Park Lodge demonstrate the variety of restoration projects Brett are so proud to deliver.”
