Setting The Standards - Safety Awareness Day At Lydd Quarry

Brett Aggregates’ Lydd Quarry site played host to 70 representatives from across the quarrying industry

Brett Aggregates’ Lydd Quarry site played host to 70 representatives from across the quarrying industry at a recent Safety Awareness Day.  The South East Quarries and Landfill Group (SEQLG), which includes representatives from the HSE and members of the quarrying and landfill industries, run these practical days annually with the purpose of raising awareness of key health and safety issues. The day is hosted by a different company every year and this year it was the turn of the Brett Group.

‘Topic stations’ were set up around the quarry site where talks were given by industry experts covering various health and safety issues such as: working at height, first aid and gas cylinder safety. Everyone then had the opportunity to take part in practical sessions and group discussions.

Gregor Mutch the Managing Director of Brett Aggregates said he was particularly proud of the effort of the site team, “Darryl Spain, Steve Wimble and Vicki Boland have all worked extremely hard preparing the site for today, the result is impressive.”

The day was aimed at quarry supervisors and general operatives with the target being that they will return to their businesses and share their new knowledge with their colleagues. The groups of representatives were given a quiz at the end of the day to test their knowledge and prizes were awarded to the teams with the highest scores.

Bill Brett commented, “These practical days are aimed at improving the workplace by supporting Brett people with skills, new thinking and technologies to identify and eliminate risk.  A quarry provides a great environment to share best practice and ideas with other representatives and experts from our industry as we focus on our aim of making all sites free from injury and ill health.”
