Drive To Improve Cycle Safety

Brett Concrete have achieved gold status in the Freight Operators Scheme (FORS) for their improvements to vehicle safety and fuel consumption. FORS is run by Transport for London and is focused on improving freight operation specifically in the London area.
One of the key focuses was to improve visibility for drivers in the dangerous ‘blind spot’ area, which is common with larger vehicles. This is especially important for inner city road safety where cyclists and pedestrians are in closer proximity to mixers and tippers and are often difficult to see.
Brett Concrete have worked hard with their suppliers to find a solution, and have successfully trialled and fitted cameras to a number of vehicles in the fleet over the last two years. A pair of cameras are fitted to the cab and images are then displayed in-cab on a 7” digital screen giving the driver a clear picture of the area and eliminating the dangerous blind-spot at the front of the vehicle.
In addition the company has also fitted side alarms to mixers, which play a bespoke audible warning when the left indicator is selected “This Brett vehicle is turning left”. All new vehicles in the Brett fleet have cameras fitted and as a part of their on going commitment to vehicle safety Brett Concrete are also retrofitting blind spot cameras to older vehicles.
Paul Sheekey, Brett Concrete’s Transport Co-ordinator received the award on behalf of Brett Concrete at a recent Transport for London conference.
