Helping To Preserve Suffolk’s Heritage

Suffolk Punch Trust visitor centre, near Woodbridge in Suffolk have been given a new lease of life

Worn and uneven tracks and pathways around the Suffolk Punch Trust visitor centre, near Woodbridge in Suffolk have been given a new lease of life thanks to a donation of crag from Brett Aggregates.

20 tonnes of Waldringfield Cragg was delivered and tipped around the site by Brett, then spread by a team from the Trust to revitalise the tracks and make them a great deal safer for all to use, enabling visitors to get up close to the majestic Suffolk Punch horses and other rare breed livestock at the centre.

The Suffolk Punch Trust is an educational and environmental charity which is dedicated to breeding and preserving the Suffolk Punch rare breed horse. Hollesley Bay Colony Stud, where the Trust is based, is the world’s oldest and largest Suffolk Punch stud farm. The site is currently home to 20 beautiful Suffolk Punch horses, including Besthorpe Achilles, the Trust’s prize-winning 17.2 hh stallion.

Strong, with a good temperament, a Suffolk Punch is a hard-working, gentle giant with a shining chesnut coat and solid stature. The breed played a vital role in our social history - as the UK industrialised and its population grew, the Suffolk Punch pulled the plough, cut the corn and carried the wheat to the mill to feed the towns.

Tracey Pettit, stud manager comments: “Our visitor centre is the perfect place to meet these magnificent horses and to learn how they shaped the landscape of East Anglia and helped farming throughout the Eastern Counties.”

Visitors to the stud can also meet other local rare breeds such as Suffolk large black pigs, Suffolk sheep, Red Poll cattle, Silver Appleyard ducks and Ixworth chickens.  The site also includes an education centre, heritage museum of rural life, an exhibition of over 60 horse drawn vehicles, vintage implements and machinery and a heritage garden which showcases plants, shrubs and trees developed in Suffolk.

The Suffolk Punch Trust is a registered charity which relies entirely on voluntary donations to raise the £220, 000 it needs each year to ensure the continued preservation of the Suffolk Punch rare breed and to educate people about the rural heritage of East Anglia.

Sara Eltman, Fundraiser for the Trust said, “We are extremely grateful to everyone at Brett Aggregates for their very generous donation of materials. Support like this from the local business community is really important to the charity as it enables us to continue our work now and in the future.”
