The Power Of Collaboration - Battersea Power Station

The restoration and reworking of Battersea Power Station - Brett Aggregates

Brett Aggregates has been playing its part in one of central London’s most spectacular development projects – the restoration and reworking of Battersea Power Station, which will see the iconic Grade II listed building and surrounding area transformed into a diverse neighbourhood comprising over two million square feet of retail, leisure, offices, homes, cultural venues and 18 acres of new public space.

Brett has been working in close collaboration with the McGee Group, who are contracted to excavate 400,000 tonnes of material and to build a huge basement area within the Battersea Power Station site. McGee transports excavated material from the Battersea site to Brett Aggregates at Hithermoor in West London, where it is crushed and screened to produce recycled aggregate ready for use in the construction project.

The two companies have worked together to ensure that this process is achieved with maximum efficiency and as few truck movements as possible.  By using the same trucks to transport excavated material and then return to site with recycled product, a significant reduction in carbon emissions and in empty vehicle movements has be achieved.

The positive outcomes achieved in this project show what can be achieved through close collaboration, with benefit for both companies.

Phil Moroney, Transport & Landfill Manager at McGee Group commented: “We have developed a strong relationship with Brett over the years, working with them to deliver effective solutions at a number of prestigious contracts in London including Wimbledon Tennis, Heathrow Airport and most recently Battersea Power Station. It is important for McGee to minimise the amount of material sent to landfill and to run our lorries efficiently. Close collaboration with Brett has allowed us to maximise the amount of material that can be recycled and back-load trucks to the site which delivers transport efficiencies.”

Daniel Haw, Sales Manager, London and Home Counties for Brett Aggregates says: “This really is a win-win situation with both parties benefitting from working together.  We have achieved notable transport efficiencies, saving costs and helping to reduce the carbon footprint of this landmark project as a whole.”
