Brett Partnership Delivers Benefits For RSPB Nature Reserve

Who would imagine that the spoil taken away from tunnelling and building projects will bring benefits to birds and wildlife in Kent?

Who would imagine that the spoil taken away from tunnelling and building projects will bring benefits to birds and wildlife in Kent? But that’s the case at Brett Aggregates’ site at Cliffe just off the Thames Estuary.

In a scheme conceived in partnership with the RSPB and Boskalis Westminster, clay, chalk and other spoil from building projects will be taken to our Cliffe site and used to fill two lakes – shallow areas, scrapes and islands will then be created in the larger of the lakes, which will provide an enhanced habitat for wading birds and other wildlife and will complement the neighbouring 236 hectare RSPB site.

Olly Brown, Development Director for Brett Aggregates commented “the partnership we have with the RSPB and Boskalis has been key to this planning permission, their input and expertise have helped us see how the project can bring great benefits for nature in that area”.

Julian Nash for the RSPB is equally positive, “This type of site is rare in the UK and is significant and positive for both the internationally important birdlife of the South Thames Estuary and Marshes, and this nationally important saline habitat.”

The Cliffe site is ideally located as materials can be delivered by boat or barge to the wharf side allowing material from large projects such as Thames Tideway, which is constructing a 25km tunnel under London and other commercial developments to be imported.
