Helping To Deliver The UK's Newest Container Port

Brett Aggregates has been awarded the contract to take delivery of aggregate from the London Gateway Port Development project

Brett Aggregates has been awarded a contract to take delivery of aggregate from dredging that is taking place in the Thames to allow some of the largest ships in the world to call at London Gateway in Essex, the UK’s new deep-water port.

The Laing O’Rourke and Dredging International (LORDI) joint venture is the main contractor appointed by DP World to deliver both the deep-water container port, and Europe’s largest logistics park to service the UK.

1.6 million tonnes of marine aggregates has been delivered into our Cliffe site so far by Dredging Internationals’ gravel dredgers, Victor Horta and Charlemagne, which are large ships capable of dredging and delivering approximately 10,000 tonnes of aggregates every 10 hours.

A 24/7 flexible shift pattern for those on site has meant that Derek Knight, our Area Production Manager and Mick Sinclair, our Operations Manager and their team are able to respond quickly and efficiently to fit with LORDI’s construction programme.  Derek commented,  "During some of the busiest campaigns we have taken up to 250,000 tonnes of aggregate in one month, which has meant all hands on deck".  Some of the aggregate is then processed and rail freighted directly from Cliffe into London to service the London construction markets.

A recent upgrade to the plant in September including installation of new Seibtechnik and Metso screens has meant we can now process in excess of

2 million tonnes of aggregate per year, creating enhanced future capacity for our Cliffe site.

Gregor Mutch the Managing Director of Brett Aggregates commented “All of the team involved with this project have shown great enthusiasm and dedication; nothing is too much trouble for them. This is about delivering a very challenging contract for our customers.”
