Record Year For Brett Lydd Half Marathon

The Brett Lydd Half Marathon and 20 mile race attracted a record number of runners this year

The Brett Lydd Half Marathon and 20 mile race attracted a record number of runners this year, many using the event as an important part of their training programme for the spring marathon season.

The event which was organised by road race specialists, Nice Work, followed a fast, flat route to the north of the town of Lydd in the Romney Marsh area of South Kent.  The 397 runners in the 20 mile race and 418 in the half marathon enjoyed good, dry conditions on the day, although spectators and followers had to wrap up well against the cold wind.

The men’s half marathon was won by Stephen McCarroll from Serpentine Running Club in London and Mandy Regenass from Lingfield Running Club in Sussex took the honours in the ladies’ half marathon. All honours in the 20 mile races went to runners from Kent - Greg Cole from Tonbridge AC was first across the line in the men’s race and Jill Cliff from Deal Tri Club came in first in the ladies’.

The Lydd Half Marathon was a popular feature in the South of England running calendar back in the 1970’s and 1980’s but it then disappeared for a number of years. Since its revival in 2008, it has gone from strength to strength and the inclusion of a 20 mile race is particularly popular with runners preparing for the London, Paris and Brighton marathons later in the spring.

Martin Burke of Nice Work explains:  “It is pretty important for runners preparing for a marathon to get a 20 mile race under their belts and there are not many of them around.  There is only one other in Kent and none this year in Sussex, which is why such a large number of people from Sussex came over.”

The Lydd event is open to runners of all standards and its pancake-flat course is perfect for those new to distance running or for those looking to post a fast time.  This year’s event also included a fun race for children, giving them a taste of the sport.

Charlie Clarke a Brett retiree and community representative comments: “Brett Group was pleased to sponsor this highly successful event again this year and we were delighted with the high turnout of both runners and supporters.”

Sunday March 13th 2016, the date for next year’s Brett Lydd Half Marathon is already in many a runner’s diary.
