Energy and Carbon Management

As the UK’s largest independent building materials group we pride ourselves on taking a long term view. Our business is based on acting responsibly and we take an active leadership role in support of carbon footprint reduction with employees on MPA committees such as UK Concrete’s Roadmap to Net Zero and Beyond, and the British Ready Mixed Concrete Association (BRMCA) Board.

Our business leaders are accountable for ensuring that we:

  • support Government and the MPA’s Net Zero strategy and comply with relevant legislation for reducing carbon emissions
  • meet industry level targets from relevant trade associations such as the Mineral Products Association, British Precast Concrete Federation and British Ready Mixed Concrete Association.

We are committed to ensuring our products and services are manufactured, processed and delivered by the efficient use of energy and an ongoing reduction in our carbon footprint*, that the businesses maximise responsible resource use through improved operational efficiency and support the management team in encouraging employees to work towards our carbon reduction targets.

In order to achieve this, we will:

  • benchmark and set improvement targets with respect to energy and carbon emissions for each Brett Group business and create an annual improvement plan
  • consider energy efficiency and carbon emissions when purchasing any new plant or equipment and in the running of existing operations including in the delivery of products to customers (see our Transport Policy)
  • reduce or replace cementitious contents by incorporating secondary alternatives with lower embodied carbon where appropriate
  • target electricity from 100% renewable sources where viable integrate alternative energy sources into our operations
  • continue to share best practice across the Group and promote and improve the reduction in energy consumption and carbon emissions
  • measure and record our consumption of energy and carbon emissions through regular internal audits and reviews
  • externally verify performance data, reporting it to key trade stakeholders and reviewing it through systems audited by accredited certification bodies
  • comply with the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and utilise the recommendations to deliver a reduction of carbon emissions and reduction in energy consumption in order to achieve net zero by 2050.
