Delivering Specialist Concrete Solutions For Guildford’s Riverside Development
Brett Concrete’s Guildford plant has been busy supplying contractor John F Hunt with a range of specialist and standard concrete mixes for the construction of St Mary’s Wharf - Guildford town centre’s newest riverside housing development.
Built on the site of the former Debenhams store and positioned on the banks of the River Wey, St Mary’s Wharf will deliver 183 new private and affordable homes alongside a new town square, riverside walk, and commercial spaces.
With the development sitting directly beside a main arm of the River Thames, ensuring long-term structural protection has been a key factor. Carl Briggs, Field Sales Manager, explains: “Without effective waterproofing, structures can become water-damaged over time, which affects structural stability and can lead to costly issues in the future. This is especially important for built spaces such as basements, where water management is key in controlling moisture and preventing erosion.
“For this project, Alex Pitt, Plant Supervisor at Guildford, and the team delivered 750m³ of our specialist waterproof mix for the groundworks, which included waterproof concrete defences along the river wall. This will help provide long-term protection for the new building’s basement car park and foundations.”

Alongside the waterproof mix, Brett Concrete’s Guildford plant has supplied over 1900m³ of standard concrete for foundations, footings, slabs, and internal floors across the development.
Throughout the project, the Guildford team worked closely with the site team to manage deliveries to the site, as only one truck could enter at a time due to limited yard space to supply the sometimes-substantial pours.
Ray Woodger, Operations Supervisor at Brett Concrete, commented: “Alex Pitt and the team did an excellent job coordinating batching and deliveries to ensure deliveries to this project ran smoothly. A great effort all round.”
With construction of the 310,000 square foot development underway, the new homes are expected to be completed by 2030.
