Brett 110 - Volunteering At The Swan Sanctuary

On Thursday 28/11/2019 Field Sales Manager Ayana Ollerhead and Sales Co-Ordinator Sarah Forrester from London and Homes Counties volunteered for the day at the Swan Sanctuary in Shepperton.

The Sanctuary has been in operation for over 100 years looking after injured or sick swans and returning them to the river whenever possible.

The start of the day involved Ayana cleaning an outside holding pen ready for any new residents and Sarah working on the washing up of what seemed like a never ending pile of feeding buckets ready for re-use later that day. Following a further scrub down of the indoor, hospital pens, the London and Home Counties team were then introduced to ‘doing the bread’ – Local supermarkets donate their daily excess bread which is then collected by the sanctuary and split into various buckets & bins for feeding time later in the day.

At one point Ayana and Sarah were asked to assist with moving some of the recovered swans from the hospital block out to the lake, so after a quick lesson of ‘how to pick up a swan’ several were relocated, making way for the next batch of poorly residents.

Both Ayana and Sarah agreed that this was a very good day and the Sanctuary which is 100% charity funded said that the donation from Brett is very gratefully received.
