Boxing Show Is A Knockout Winner
Brett Group was proud to sponsor The Prince of Wales Youth Club’s boxing show and the event was a ‘major success’.
Located in Canterbury, The Prince of Wales Youth Club (POWYC) dates back to 1935, with the primary goal of supporting disadvantaged youths by teaching new skills and offering new experiences. Brett Group has long had ties with the POWYC and was keen to support its first ever boxing show.
While the youth club organises a range of activities, its boxing academy in particular is seen as a core part to its heritage and success. The club’s facilities and coaching have offered a sense of structure and fulfillment to a large number of young people from around the area, with inclusivity being at the forefront.
The boxing show was attended by roughly one hundred people, with strong measures in place to ensure that the event remained COVID compliant. Among the attendees was Alister Brady, Labour Councillor for Canterbury City North. The Councillor had the honour of presenting the hard-earned trophies to the young participants, who represented their clubs in one of the 15 competitive bouts.
The event was a rare opportunity to bring together a host of boxing communities from around the county, including some from further afield. Most of the nation’s grassroots clubs have been heavily affected by COVID, and the POWYC boxing show was the county’s first since the onset of the pandemic. In contrast to the sport’s highly competitive nature, the boxing clubs showed a warm camaraderie, and were keen to support each other during the special event.
Reporting on the boxing show, Joey Wicks, POWYC Centre Coordinator said: “The event could not have gone ahead without the support of Brett, as the expense of running a boxing show is high. This includes ring hire, doctors, trophies, an announcer, referee, and judges’ expenses, as well as food for the boxers and trainers. We are very grateful for the support shown by Brett Group and their Chairman, Bill Brett. The company very kindly sponsored the whole event and provided us with the platform to deliver a first-class show which was a major success.”
