Brett's Trief Cadet Chevron Kerbs reduce Sign Pollution
The Challenge
A new housing and commercial area in Bracknell, Berkshire required a new approach to road design which reduced the amount of signage present and directed drivers in a safe manner around three large roundabouts in the development.
Joint developers Redrow Persimmon commissioned John Reilly Civil Engineering to start work on the road infrastructure for the development, including the showcase roundabouts at Peacock Farm. Consideration was made to Section 278 of the Highways Act which states that any developments exits and approaches must improve the local infrastructure as well as support the project.
Also, the developers were mindful of a recent AA report that highlighted the poor state of road signs in the UK. The report shows that signs can regularly cause hazards for road users by being allowed to become overgrown with vegetation or become dirty or broken, plus more and more signs on the roads mean that there may be just too many to read in the time available for the driver, causing accidents.
The Solution
Bretts technical design team worked closely with WSP and Bracknell Forest Council to design and supply one 14 metre and two 12 metre Trief
® Cadet Chevron
roundabouts made from 2,000 individual kerbs. The kerbs incorporated black and white arrows, giving a strong visual message to drivers by pointing them in the right direction.
