Provian Construction are dedicated to encouraging and developing people in the Construction Industry and strongly endorses the integration of skills development within all our construction projects. We actively engage in securing training placements and employing local people on our projects (wherever feasible). As part of this we will welcome local work experience placements, support our employees to improve their skills and engage in further training and encourage our subcontractors to do the same. Examples of how we can get involved to promote learning, skills and employment are listed below: • Supervised/structured visits to the site • Lessons on site in specific trades • Part time work experience placements • Apprenticeships/Pre-apprenticeships • Mentoring from key staff / Talks to groups and Individual’s (Construction Ambassadors) Paddock Wood Primary School visit site: Whilst constructing a new Health Centre in Paddock Wood Provian took children from the local Primary School (3 groups of 15 children) to visit the site. The purpose of their visit was to learn about different construction materials and to see real examples of these inline with a school project they were working on. Hayesbrook School - Bricklaying Masterclass: In 2007 at Hayesbrook School, where we completed the construction of a new teaching block and autistic unit, a group of year 11 pupils were taken onto site and given a lesson in bricklaying by a qualified tradesman. Work Experience: Provian Construction works closely with a number of training providers to tackle skills shortages within the industry (CITB, Constructionskills, LSC, Invicta Training Group www.ictg.org.uk etc). As part of this we actively encourage and take on work experience placements and trainees in all fields and are encouraging our main sub-contractors to do the same. Provian Construction visit School Careers Events to present the construction industry as a career option particularly to year’s 11, 12 and 13. Pre- Apprenticeships/Apprenticeships: Provian Construction offer formal pre and full apprenticeships to work on our sites across the South East. This provides ‘hands on’ long term work experience to give teenagers more than just a taster of the industry. Apprenticeships include block release at a specialist construction college. ‘Construction Ambassador’ Scheme: Our aim is to illustrate the wide range of career opportunities available from professional consultants and contractors to specialist trades, the diversity of the construction industry and to encourage all young people and in particular females that the construction industry is open to them. The following Provian employees are certified ‘Construction Ambassadors’ and would be delighted to visit the school to talk to students to educate them about the construction industry: Cliff Reader – Site Manager Ross Savin – Quantity Surveyor Joanna Andrews – Estimator Herne Bay High School Case Study: Our site at Herne Bay High School, as part of Kent BSF scheme, is a dedicated National Skills Academy and Provian are fully committed to provide onsite training, apprenticeships and work experience to up-skill the existing work forces, motivate and encourage school leavers into the industry and train them accordingly.
