Client: Viridor Waste Management Location: Beddington, Croydon Form of Contract: NCE Value: £400,000 Designer: Peter Baxter Associates Completion Due: May 2009 Due to inclement weather works at the site in Croydon were brought to a close late 2008 and are due to recommence in April this year (2009). The £400,000 contract at Beddington Landfill required new cell preparation and the capping of existing full cells and gas infrastructure works. Provian are moving 150,000m³ of soil. Clay found naturally on the site is being used to engineer the site lining instead of plastic cell lining and 30,000m³ of it will be used to cap the existing cells. Subsequent to this, approximately 7,000m² of recycled tyre bales are being used for leachate drainage at the base of the new cells. This system of recycling tyres is much more environmentally friendly and cost effective than imported gravel and utilises old tyres. Full to capacity, the existing cells have been capped with clay and restoration soils 1.5 - 2m thick. This incorporates a well and pipe work network to extract gas from the landfill to power generation facilities. The project marks the second time that Provian employees, now trained for pipe welding, surveying and testing have carried out the gas infrastructure works themselves to remove gas from the waste sent to landfill.
