Client: Medway NHS Trust Location: Medway Maritime Hospital, Kent Value: £1.2m Form of Contract: JCT 98 with CDP & Amendments 1-5 Year of Completion: 2006 Architects: Neaves Perry Working on a particularly tight site Provian Construction successfully designed & built a new Ophthalmology Unit at the heart of the busy Medway Maritime Hospital for Medway NHS Trust. The timber framed single storey building was built onto a steel sub-frame to allow the new building to match the level of the existing surrounding buildings and featured an insulated metal roof. Internally, the facility provides a number of general consulting rooms, an operating theatre and specialist eye treatment rooms for procedures such as laser vision correction treatment. To meet NHS specifications all walls were designed with a high level of sound protection, necessary for private consulting rooms. Concealed on every elevation the only form of access to the site was via a scaffold walkway for labour and via a mobile tower crane for materials (pictured left). All surrounding buildings remained fully functional throughout the works and close attention was paid to pedestrian diversions around the working area whilst ensuring all roads remained open and emergency access was never obscured. "I would like to let you and your colleagues know how excellent the Provian Construction staff have been thus far during the ophthalmology project to us locally in the Rehab dept. They could not have been more helpful, accommodating and considerate at all times and have helped what could have been a very difficult time to go as smoothly as possible" Sue Lein, Head of Physiotherapy Medway NHS Trust
