Herne Bay Grid Substation

Client: EDF Energy

Location: Herne Bay, Kent

Value: £0.6 million

Form of Contract: ICE 7th Edition with EDF conditions

Actual Contract Duration: 26wks

Year of Completion: 2004

Provian Construction successfully completed the construction of the new 132KV substation to extend the existing complex at Herne Bay for EDF Energy.

The works involved the construction of a new switch house, formation of a new compound including brick blast walls and construction of the reinforced concrete bases for two new Transformers.

A new access road, drainage and all landscaping works were carried out by Provian Construction to complete the site. These works were vital to serve the Kentish Flats Offshore Wind Farm where Provian Construction were involved in laying the 3 sub sea cables in the tidal zone area.

The electricity generated by the wind farm is sent directly to the transformers before being distributed to the Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay region via the National Grid.
