Client: Kent County Council Location: Westerham, Kent Value: £1.2million Completion: 2009 Architect: Burns Guthrie & Partners Cost Consultant: Clipston Construction Control Provian Construction has completed a new £1.2 million project to refurbish part of Valence School, a Special Needs School at Westerham in Kent. Awarded by Kent County Council, the scheme saw Provian Construction undertake the complete modernisation and internal remodelling of a single storey residential building. The works, completed on time, on budget and with zero defects, were undertaken to bring the building in line with current standards. Set in beautiful parkland, Valence School is an LEA funded Special School catering for students from 5-19 years, with physical disabilities and/or complex medical needs. The school offers a range of services for students and provides term boarding as well as day places for students up to Year 11. To bring the school’s facilities up to current standards, Provian Construction, working with architects Burns Guthrie and Partners and cost consultants Clipston Construction Control Ltd, undertook a complete interior strip of the building. The building is laid out into a number of separate bedrooms where care is provided to the students. As part of the works, the internal layout was remodelled to provide easy access for less able children and provide ensuite facilities to all rooms. External repairs included overlaying the existing flat roof to ensure the building is completely watertight. As part of the project, new environmental controls were added to each of the bedrooms. These provide the students with easy and independent control of functions such as opening windows and doors through to turning on stereos. The project is an indication of Provian’s ability to work in a range of sectors, in this case meeting the challenges presented by both special education and publically funded works.
