Aerial View of Parrock Street Car Park The project, scheduled to last approximately 27 weeks yet completed several weeks early, has created a rubble-free and puddle-free parking facility with more spaces - 648 in total, 16 of which comprising disabled bays - better pedestrian access and increased night visibility.

Provian Construction’s Civil Engineering and Earthworks division began works in January 2006, after an assessment carried out by council officers and external specialists revealed surfacing problems at the public car park. Built on a site where houses had previously been demolished during the 1960’s, voids were discovered below the car park surface causing depressions and collapses.

Pay & Display Machines at Parrock Street Car ParkFunded by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, reconstruction work had to meet tight budgetary constraints. To keep the scheme on track financially, Provian Construction engineered a host of new cost-saving techniques, such as crushing and re-using existing materials. As an added bonus, thousands of tonnes of waste materials were recycled on-site - saving environmental damage caused by transporting and dumping waste off-site.

Provian began by excavating former basements, removing the loose rubble and existing tarmac. These hardcore materials were then crushed, recycled and used to refill the basements, before being re-laid as properly compacted surface aggregate. New kerbing was installed, drainage repairs carried out and resurfacing works completed to finalise the improvement programme.

Early Completion Sign at Parrock Street Car ParkA crucial element of the project was to reduce the time that the car park was out of action. To meet the brief, Provian Construction maintained a temporary parking area comprising 200 spaces throughout construction works. As well as ensuring that parking bays remained functional for local residents, pay and display revenue was also sustained for the Council.
