Both competitors and spectators experienced near perfect conditions at the Julie Rose Stadium and Connigbrook Lakes in Ashford for the third Brett Ashford Triathlons and Aquabikes events on Sunday 16th June.
There were four events on the day - a standard distance triathlon comprising a 1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run, a sprint triathlon where triathletes complete a 750m swim, 20K bike and 5K run, plus aquabikes - where the athletes complete the same courses without the run. The aquabike events are also suitable for those who are new to triathlons and indeed there were many first timers taking part.
The Mayor of Ashford, Councillor David Smith, signalled the start of the day as competitors entered the cool lake waters in swim ‘waves’ for the standard and sprint competitions.
In the men's standard triathlon Scott Wiseman of Ashford Tri Club took the honours crossing the line first in a new course record of 2:02:23, followed by Charlie Brown of Met Police Tri in a time of 2:04:15.
The ladies standard distance was won by top pro triathlete and former Ironman UK winner Yvette Grice racing for Bodyworks XTC, finishing more than 20 minutes ahead of her nearest rival, in another new course record of 2:11:22. Second home for the ladies was Lissa Mitchell, of Ashford Tri Club, who completed the course in 2:32:03.
Councillor David Smith kindly presented the trophies and prizes along with Tim Smith, the Commercial Director from Brett Aggregates.
Liz King the Event Director for Tri Spirit Events said, "The event was a great success and It was good to see so many people from the local community not only taking part, but also watching the events during the morning." She added, “These events take a huge amount of organising and we really appreciate all the support from our marshals, volunteers and sponsors.”
