Landscaping Sustainability Charter Success
18/03/2009

In November 2008, just four months after Chris Droogan, Managing Director, Brett Landscaping and Building Products, signed up to the British Precast Concrete Federation Sustainability Charter, environmental auditors from BPCF paid Barrow upon Soar a visit to see how the business was performing against their 15 industry based principles on sustainability.

By signing up to the Charter, the business had pledged to tackle a series of challenges. They included developing products that improve the quality of the built environment, minimising waste disposal to landfill, cutting pollution and emissions, using energy efficiently and reducing its carbon footprint. Other areas such as ethical trading and community engagement are also monitored.

The Charter also helps customers to choose between manufacturers who are committed to sustainability and improving their performance.

Jane Campion, Marketing Manager, Pam Firth, Quality Manager, and Meirion Webber, SHE Manager, teamed up to focus on sustainability standards, introducing improved procedures and to prepare for the audit.

Their hard work paid off when auditors said it was one of the best inspections they had carried out to date.

Norman Richards, Environmental Consultant, commented, “I was impressed by the high level of commitment the company has shown in meeting the requirements of the Sustainability Charter.   I look forward to visiting again in 2009 to assess progress on a number of initiatives they have started.”

Jane Campion said, “This is a fantastic achievement. Since signing the Charter this summer we have been able to demonstrate that everyone at Landscaping and Building Products is serious in their commitment to improvement on meeting the challenges of sustainability.”
