Provian Construction Completes Extensive Refurbishment of Herne Bay High School

31/01/2012

Provian Construction has completed a £20 million rebuild and refurbishment of Herne Bay High School in Kent, including the construction of a £5m community sports arena, new class rooms, a specialist dance centre and theatre space to accommodate large groups, a roller hockey arena with tiered spectator seating, Information and Communications Technology
(ICT) suite and library.

The project began in 2008 as part of the Government’s Building Schools For The Future (BSF) initiative for Kent County Council. As design and build contractors,   Provian selected Clague architects and completed all 7 phases of the works ahead of schedule in early January 2012, after just over three years on site.

Benefitting the whole community, the new sports hall facility will allow the relocation of roller hockey, long mat bowls and many other sport and leisure activities from the Pier Sports Centre on Herne Bay sea front.

The sports arena includes a full size synthetic turf pitch, three floodlit tennis/netball courts, a multi-use games area, climbing walls, two full size football pitches, a summer grass athletics track, a junior football pitch, a 24-station fitness gym and coaching education areas.

At the heart of the school a major new indoor courtyard has been developed to act
as a multi-functional space around which refurbished teaching and ICT areas are
sited, as well as new dining and cafe facilities.

Provian’s expertise in a number of areas including demolition, new build, remodelling and refurbishment, coupled with their ongoing excellent relationship with the client allowed the project to be delivered on time, within budget and to a high standard.

Head teacher at Herne Bay High School, Dr Claire Owen, said: “As a Specialist Sports College, we are incredibly proud to have been a key partner in such an exciting project. The new arena, sports halls and other facilities at the school provide an exceptional sports venue for not only our students, but also our wider local community, and one that can be enjoyed for many years to come. This project has really demonstrated what fantastic results can be achieved through working together for the benefit of all.”

Roger Maycock of Provian Construction commented “Our ability to deliver this multi
phased project on a live site on time and to a high standard is a reflection of the team’s expertise, dedication and ‘can do’ attitude. We are proud to be involved in challenging projects like these not least because they make a real difference to the surrounding communities.”
