The last 10 years of our first century and the first decade of the new millenium saw a series of takeovers and major contracts that completely changed the face of our company and increased our annual turnover to £200m.
In the UK we acquired three sand and gravel companies and four precast building products businesses, and met unprecedented demands for aggregates and concrete. We also restructured our group, selling subsidiaries that deserved the support of parent companies with specialist expertise in markets in which we were not strongly represented.
The new policy was initiated by Bill Brett, who was appointed Executive Deputy Chairman in 1999, and enabled us to concentrate more of our skills and resources into producing quarried and sea-dredged aggregates, and end-products made from them.
