Brett Keeps Things Moving on Forth Road Bridge

The Challenge

Forth Road Bridge

In planning the replacement of eight toll booths on the heavily trafficked Forth Road Bridge, West Lothian, the Forth Estuary Transport Authority considered safety as paramount. Vehicles needed to be prevented from encroaching onto the toll booth islands, which could potentially cause an accident, damaging the booth or interrupting the flow of traffic through the toll.

The  Solution

Forth Road BridgeBrett Landscaping and Building Products’ Trief ® kerbs were specified by Hyder Consulting, Ian Illes, Project Director explained the specification of the Trief ® Kerb:
“The Trief ® kerbs channel vehicles into the toll lane. Its high face emphasises the constrained space and encourages speed reduction as well as providing a level of protection to the toll booth and operator. It is a quality product that Hyder Consulting specified for its proven low speed containment value.”

The concave recess of the Trief ® kerb provides a visual caution prompting drivers to steer away. If a vehicle should veer towards the kerb, the recess traps the bulge in the tyre wall and redirects the vehicle back onto the carriageway in a line dictated by the kerb, minimising danger to other traffic following behind.

”We are delighted with the new toll booths,” remarked Alastair Andrew, General Manager at the Forth Estuary Transport Authority. “The Trief ® Kerb will help to ensure high levels of safety for the vehicles entering the toll lanes.”
