Competitors Beat The Cold At Brett Winter Marathon

Almost 350 athletes braved chilly temperatures on Sunday 25th November to take part in the Brett Owler winter marathon, half marathon and 10K race, all starting and finishing at the Julie Rose Stadium in Ashford, Kent.

Marathon competitors from far and wide – one all the way from Norway – set out from the stadium on a two-lap route around Conningbrook Lake Country Park and into the Kent countryside through Naccolt, Brook and Bulltown.

Alan Hilley, stormed ahead to win the marathon in 3.25.31 with Mark Payne of Maidstone Harriers, coming in exactly one minute later in 3.26.31 and Robert McDonough third with a time of 3.27.49. The ladies’ marathon was won by Suze Gill who had a clear lead and crossed the finish line in 3.37.05, with Kate Mitchell second in 3.44.26 and local runner Kath Atkinson of Ashford Striders third in 3.59.03.

The half marathon saw the largest field of athletes for the day running one lap of the marathon route. Nick Collins, was first to finish in 1.21.27, improving on the second place he achieved last year, while Fergus Catmur came in second in 1.28.02 and Alexander Ashton third in 1.30.44. The ladies’ event was a close-fought battle, but Imogen Bachra took the win in 1.44.06 followed just 10 seconds later by Emma Greatrix of Canterbury Harriers, in 1.44.16. Third place went to Linda-Jean Delport of Ashford Striders, in 1.45.00.

The last race to start was the 10K with a new course following sections of the marathon route. Mark Breed crossed the finish line in the Julie Rose stadium with a clear lead on his nearest rival, achieving a time of 38.44. Jason Ransley of Folkestone Running Club took second place in 42.49. Third place went to Toby Bryant of Ashford Tri Club in 45.18. The first lady across the line was Chris Costiff with an impressive 46.23, followed by Phiona Lees in 48.35 and Emma White who came in third with a time of 48.53.

Liz King, Event Director for Tri Spirit Events, said: “These events wouldn’t happen without our sponsors Brett Group and the incredible crew of volunteer marshals we have, including the Tri Spirit Team and 1st Park Farm Scouts, who helped to make the events run smoothly in freezing conditions.”
