Reservoir Construction

Construction by Brett Plant & Earthmoving of a 50,000m2 irrigation reservoir on the site of a former gravel quarry.

The main challenge was the removal of a significant quantity of waterlogged overburden and control of substantial groundwater inflows. A controlled pumping/dewatering operation was implemented and temporary drainage channels were excavated to redirect the water.

A sequenced programme of excavation works then followed to form proposed levels and contours as specified. Clay was excavated from the basal areas and engineered to form sideliner walls, a dividing bund and a key trench.

Upon completion of the reservoir construction circa 100,000m3 of overburden had been removed and circa 50,000m3 of clay had used to form an impermeable barrier to hold water.
